Lisa Coleman’s Bird Weekly challenge this week features Hawks
One of my favourites is Harris’s Hawk. It’s not native to Britain but is very popular in falconry so can often be seen.

Buzzards are common in the UK. They usually mate for life and survive in most habitats.

Peregrine falcons are often seen hovering over hedgerows and open fields.

A few years ago my sister and and I visited the Wolf Conversation Trust and red kites were waiting for any scraps left by the wolves after feeding time.

Fantastic Hawk photos this week. Harris’s Hawk is so fabulous, isn’t he? Just FYI…as I stated in my post this week, Falcons are not in the same family as Hawks. Of course they are predators, but are more related to parrots…strangely enough. Somebody mated with somebody at some point outside their own kind. LOL! I love the Red Kite. I would love to see that bird some day. 🙂

Ah, I missed that. I saw somewhere it was also called the sparrow hawk? I think it was the American kestrel though. I’m not sure now.

I don’t see an American Kestrel in your photos. I saw one yesterday as we took a day trip for a full day of birding about 2 1/2 hours south of here. We picked up two new birds for the year. The American Kestrel was one and the Eastern Meadowlark was the other. It was great to get out as I’ve been cooped up for a couple of weeks with my foot in a boot. I didn’t walk much. We were on driving trails and went there on purpose. I still have a few weeks of healing. 🙂

No sorry, I didn’t mean I had an American kestrel, I just thought they might all come under the same banner. Glad you were able to get out and what a bonus to find new birds! Hope your foot heals soon 🙂

American Kestrels are in the Falconidae family. Different family than the hawks but same as the falcons, hobby & caracara. We were searching for the Crested Caracara yesterday but did not see one where people having been logging one for several days. If I ever get a good pic one, I will do a them to the Falcons. 🙂

These are gorgeous pics of hawks, Cathy! It’s nice to see the buzzards up close. We have a version of buzzards known as California Condors that hover the thermals for hours on end.

Thanks, Terri. Yes, our buzzards do that too. It’s amazing to watch.
It was such a great day and so wonderful to see these birds close up.
